Established in 2007, Hapoel Katamon Mo’adon Ohadim is a Jerusalemite intercultural sports club with an uncompromising, unique mission: bringing together Israelis and Palestinians, male and female and children, youth, and adults hailing from all corners of the city. Hapoel Jerusalem is by far the largest and most prominent sports, peace-building, and nonviolence organization in Israel.

The project, within a sporting context, tackles the root symptoms of the conflict – animosity, alienation, racism, violence, extremism, prejudices, and stereotypes – and contributes to conflict mitigation in the city.

Katamon’s Neighborhoods League operates in the marginalized neighborhoods of the city, uniquely providing the participants with Learning Centers designed to improve their academic achievements and promoting personal development stemming from football.

They stick to an environment of inclusion for all ethnic and religious affiliations and all genders, while studying each other’s language and culture. Led mainly by youth, Hapoel Katamon Jerusalem (the professional football team) is democratically owned by the fans as a civil society, non-profit organization (CSO/NGO), a structure widely accepted and very popular in Jerusalem.

Katamon’s Neighborhood League practices the values of conflict mitigation, gender equality, shared society, and a real dialog between the various sectors in the city. The successful football club nurtures an environment of fair play, nonviolence, tolerance, and respect, and their projects set an example that can be replicated in other conflict zones around the globe.

Football as an Arena: Using football as an arena for educational activities and conflict mitigation on the personal, familial and communal levels, Katamon emphasizes the unique mosaic of Jerusalem with an egalitarian approach to all sides of the city and for all participants.

Around 550 girls and boys, ages 8-14, participate in football training twice a week. One particular method they use is that the children referee themselves. This creates a unique and spectacular opportunity for cooperation and collective problem-solving before coming to agreement among themselves. This carries forward from the football field into their daily lives.

Female Football: One of the club’s methodological priorities is the fully equal approach to female football. As a mandatory rule, each school asking to join the program and establish a boys’ football team is required to establish a girls’ team, too. Hapoel Jerusalem is a leader in female football and the only club for girls and women in Jerusalem. Their senior team has just been promoted to the Israeli Premiere League. Katamon strives to reduce gender-related bias and to overcome stigma and social restrictions imposed on girls and women.

Learning Centers: Katamon believes that sports should go hand in hand with academic excellence. Thus, they have established and are operating afternoon learning centers in schools. All Neighborhoods League participants are required to attend a Learning Center once a week to improve their academic achievements. Katamon trains and employs the facilitators for these centers in a joint venture with the school principals.

Steering Committee: This committee oversees the projects, leads the teams, synchronizes events, solves problems, and acts as a think-tank. They are responsible for planning and designing future programs and events and securing the financial independence of these projects.

The majority of members are women. The committee includes (wherever applicable): 1 Israeli and 1 Palestinian, 3 HK senior officials, 2 football coaches, 2 school principals, 2 parents, 1 evaluation professional, and 1 CMM expert. This helps monitor and fine-tune activities and provides well-articulated solutions to challenges. This form of a broad think-tank improves communication between all parties and helps advance the project’s work.
