Scarlett Lewis founded the Choose Love Movement after her 6 year old son, Jesse, was murdered during the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in December, 2012. It was one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. At 6 years old, Jesse, alongside 19 of his first-grade classmates and 6 educators, died. It was determined by law enforcement that Jesse used his final moments to heroically save 9 of his classmates and friends.
After Jesse’s death, Scarlett decided to be part of the solution to the issues that we are seeing in our society that have led to the mass murder in the Sandy Hook primary school and other tragedies. In the shock of the tragedy and the depths of her grief, she received an outpouring of love from around the world and realized how much this love healed her. Scarlett believed that if we humans knew how to give and receive love, these kind of tragedies wouldn’t happen in the first place.
She courageously created the Choose Love Movement to teach how to Choose Love. She became an advocate for the importance of character development and social and emotional learning (SEL), which teach children how to recognize, feel, and manage their emotions, feel connected, and have healthy, respectful relationships.
Before his death, Jesse left a message on their kitchen chalkboard, “Norturting Helinn Love” in kids handwriting, (Nurturing, Healing, Love). When Scarlett learned that these words are included in the definition of “compassion” across all cultures, she realized that love, connection, and belonging are universal wants and needs that bind all of humanity.
She established the formula:
“Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion-in-Action = Choosing Love”
as the basis of her widely used educational programs teaching people of all ages how to Choose Love.
The Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement™ was established, and continues to be a no-cost program for schools. It has organically expanded into programs for home, for work, and the community.
Sports teams, military families, and prisons all use the Choose Love Programs to teach leadership and restoration, ease anxieties, strengthen healthy relationships, and prioritize Choosing Love.
Since 2013, the Choose Love Programs have been fulfilling the mission to create safer schools and a safer world by teaching people of all ages how to use Nurturing, Healing Love in all circumstances and relationships.
Practicing social and emotional leadership skills improves culture and cultivates an environment that is welcoming, supportive, compassionate, and safe.
The Choose Love Movement offers programs tailored for any age, from toddlers through adulthood. At the core of it all is a simple formula:

Curiosity is our natural ability to look at things with fresh eyes. As we put aside opinions, concepts, projections, and expectations: we become available to experience this moment with the wonder and innocence of a child.
Being curious brings us into a natural, open, and vast space to explore: “What is this?” “What am I experiencing?” “What am I feeling?”
4. Bring more awareness to what you are feeling. Focus on your felt experience and the qualities of the Inner Resource as you embody it. Resist the habit to analyze. Simply feel your body and emotions.
5. Be open to your current experience, whatever it is, without judgment. Just ride the wave of the experience.
6. Remember that the quality of your attention and what you are feeling are more important than the content. Notice how your attention changes, waxing and waning, growing stronger, and sometimes getting distracted. No worries, simply bring your awareness back to the moment, take a deep breath, and focus on the Inner Resource.
7. Become familiar with the feelings and sensations of the Inner Resource you have chosen. Feel what is showing up in your physical body and your emotional body. Be curious to discover how this Inner Resource will support you in your life, to be who you really want to be, and feel how you really want to feel. It is through feeling the Inner Resource that you activate the frequency of it.
1. Feel your body.
2. Relax your shoulders.
3. Choose a word that makes you feel peaceful, such as om, peace, or love.
4. Inhale slowly while mentally saying the word you chose. Pause before starting the exhalation.
5. Exhale slowly while mentally saying 1 with the first breath. Exhale saying 2 with the second breath, up to 5 or more.
Relax your body, and just be aware of how your body feels. Be curious about what is happening in your body. Without changing anything, just notice what you are feeling. Notice where you are feeling things in your body. Make yourself more comfortable if you’d like. Take a deep breath, and feel the sensation of aliveness and the energy of your body.
