Each one of us has unique talents and abilities, but how many of us are using these gifts to make a difference in the world?
Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, climate activist, leader of the Earth Guardians, and Hip-Hop Artist, is an extraordinary young teen changing the world. He has been fighting climate change from the tender age of six and is well and truly on the world stage, passionately standing up against powerful corporations and governments for a better world for all.
While standing on the front lines and fighting issues that too many of us may feel hopeless against, Xiuhtezcatl uses his immense creative gifts and passion for music to help his climate change message reach more people.
“I think climate activism is less of a title and more of who I am and what I do. It’s not like a separate life that I live or a job. The way that I see and understand the world makes it impossible for me not to be active in the world in this way and I think hip-hop is just another way to communicate that. Hip-hop has also become a really important way for me to communicate my own story and to share the experiences and the emotions of what it’s like to go through the world as a sixteen-year-old climate activist.”
The heavy issues in the world today, like fracking, pipelines, and massive destruction of the environment, get us all down and Xiuhtezcatl standing in the furnace of these global problems shares how creative expression helped him when he became lost and unbalanced with his activism calling.
“I think music helped me find myself more than anything else ever has. It’s a connection to a voice that allows me to tell my story in a different way. It makes me more real as a human being.”
He believes we all have creative gifts that are needed by the earth right now:
“Not every young person is a front line spokesperson, or an activist necessarily, but they have a voice and these young people have some way they express themselves in the world and that is very important.”
Here Xiuhtezcatl Martinez shares his insights on creative activism and some new music from his debut release as well.
